Push your boundaries as a staff member in hematological flow cytometry laboratory medicine

UZ Leuven is dedicated to staying at the forefront of healthcare by delivering exceptional care, pioneering research, and top education.

Within this mission, the Laboratory Medicine Department, specializing in hematology, plays a pivotal role. It provides diagnostic services for a wide range of conditions, with a particular focus on hematology and immunology. Flow cytometry is one of the key techniques employed in our testing portfolio. Over the years, we have developed an extensive range of flow cytometric panels used for the diagnosis and monitoring of leukemias, lymphomas, and to support clinical research.

To further enhance our activities in hematological flow cytometry, UZ Leuven is seeking a dedicated specialist in analytical techniques for the hematology lab. Working alongside laboratory technologists, medical specialists, and operational leads, you will get a vital role in expanding diagnostics for hematological disorders.

This position offers a 80 to 100 % permanent contract.

How will you push boundaries?

  • Your role is to ensure the continuity and expansion of the flow cytometric analyses within the hematology subdomain.
  • Developing new flow cytometric applications in collaboration with medical staff members across various domains.
  • Performing complex diagnostic analyses.
  • Reporting flow cytometric test results and translating scientific data into clinically applicable outcomes.
  • Deepening your scientific expertise in the field, including participating in international meetings and working groups, and presenting scientific data.
  • Co-supervising daily diagnostic activities, ensuring the smooth operation of the team, and identifying, diagnosing, and resolving technical and content-related issues.
  • Overseeing the trial runs of various tests, preparing validation files, and drafting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). You will also train team members when transitioning new tests to routine diagnostics.
  • Contributing to quality assurance related to the diagnostics for these tests.

What do you bring to the table?

  • A master’s degree in biomedical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, engineering, biology, biochemistry, or biotechnology.
  • Proven scientific and practical experience in flow cytometry. A PhD is not required but is considered an added value.
  • You preferably have an MLT certification, but it is not a requirement.
  • You have a creative mindset and value collaboration and interaction with your colleagues.
  • You enjoy tackling challenges autonomously and proactively, while setting high standards for the quality of your work.
  • UZ Leuven is a Dutch-speaking hospital. Proficiency in Dutch or a willingness to learn is required, with the expectation of reaching level B2 within 2.5 years.
